I’m the Lucky One

Yesterday I was hard at work on my newest endeavor – entering various online sweepstakes in hopes of winning a bigger vehicle to handle our growing family – when my husband asked what I was doing.  When I confessed, his only response was “we don’t have that kind of luck.”

I wasn’t sure how to respond; in the times I’ve heard that phrase before it’s never been with positive connotation.  What kind of luck is it that we do have, then?  Was it luck that caused me to be born to a family that loves to laugh and would give you the shirt off their back or their last crust of bread?  Or that my parents worked so hard to make sure I knew I was loved?  Was it luck that made me decide to move over 2000 miles, where I would find my husband?  Or that we endured a nearly catastrophic health crisis so that our youngest son would be born to know his father?

My husband and I have our challenges.  Like so many families, we struggle each and every day to balance work and family and the sometimes overwhelming financial crush of bills, gas prices and rising grocery costs.  I’m grateful that we have the American-dream trifecta of employment, a home not in foreclosure, and health insurance, and I realize that one or all of these could disappear at a moment’s notice.  I don’t know what kind of luck we do have, but I’ll take it.

Don’t minimize the importance of luck in determining life’s course.  – Alex Trebek
